Election Pledge: Lib Dems will back a People's Vote

The Liberal Democrats will double down their pressure on Manchester Council to back a People's Vote, in the second of five key election pledges.

The Liberal Democrats have been the only unashamedly pro-European party consistently against Brexit from the very beginning.

Manchester Council has refused to officially back a People's Vote three times, despite the city voting to Remain in 2016's referendum and polls suggesting support has risen to as high as 75%.

Liberal Democrat Spokesperson Greg Stanton said:

"Despite Manchester voting overwhelmingly to remain in the EU, this council has refused to back our People’s Vote motion – three times.

"No matter what, the Liberal Democrats are committed to a future in the European Union and it is really important that councils like Manchester take a stand against Brexit.

"We will unequivocally back a People's Vote, giving 16- and 17-year-olds the final say with an option to Remain."

The Liberal Democrats 2019 manifesto will be launched on Monday 25th March at Twenty Twenty Two. To attend, please RSVP here.
